I can be commissioned to produce bespoke original drawings of your beloved companion(s) – I hesitate to use the word ‘pet’ because animals are more than that to most people; they are part of the family. Because of this, a portrait makes a very special gift or a fabulous addition to your own home.
I draw the portrait using your photographs, and whilst they take many hours to do, I aim to keep them affordable by providing a range of different sizes to choose from. I will give you tips on taking photographs to make sure that the portrait is a great composition and as detailed as possible – it’s the small things that make up the characteristics of the animal. Before I get started on the drawing I will discuss with you which photograph to use and the composition that will work the best.
You can see examples below (click on the drawing to see more detail). Further examples can be found on the Animal Portrait page.
All drawings are produced on museum quality, Fine Art Trade Guild approved paper. The paper (including mount) is acid free and complies with the highest archival quality standards. All drawings are mounted using a window mount with an acid free back, and are wrapped in clear cellophane. By default a neutral white coloured mount board is used.
Animal portrait commissions are charged as follows (other sizes can be accommodated, please do ask) :
- £55 for a ‘Pocket Portrait’ (exc. postage) – image size approx. 5×5 inch, mounted to fit in a 9×9 inch frame.
- £100 for A5 size drawing (exc. postage).
- £190 for A4 size drawing (exc. postage).
- £290 for 14 x 11 inch size drawing (exc. postage).
Please note – depending on the composition, the overall paper size is often larger than the drawing – e.g. an A5 size drawing may be produced on A4 paper to allow for an appropriate composition (this will be confirmed upfront and excludes ‘Pocket Portraits’, which are sized as per the description above). All are mounted to fit in standard size frames, sizes listed above refer to the approx. drawing size i.e. before the picture is mounted.
Postage is between £7 and £11 (depending on the size of the artwork) and is additional to the commission prices above. All drawings are sent by recorded delivery.
A 40% deposit is required upfront when commissioning the drawing. The remaining balance is due when the drawing is complete and before I post it out to you. I will update you as I go along, and I will also email over a photograph/scan of the final piece before it is sent.
“I was absolutely delighted by the portrait of my beloved cat Tarka. Kate took a lot of care and attention in making sure she had the right pictures to really capture Tarka’s unique personality. In terms of correspondence, I could not fault Kate. Emails were answered swiftly and with great care to make sure my queries were addressed. The actual picture was a masterpiece: Kate has such skill as an artist. I will most certainly be asking Kate to draw my other two cats to add to this one”.
“Thank you so much for the lovely portrait of Willow, my cat. You have really captured her! It was a wonderful surprise and I can’t wait to show it off”.
“I used Kate Priestman to draw a portrait of my Uncle’s dog Otto, for a Christmas present. Kate was very good at explaining what options I had regarding the layout of the drawing, how long it would take and the price. The result just blew us all away. It really is Otto on the drawing! Kate has done an amazing job, capturing his fur, look and personality perfectly from the photo. He has now taken the prime spot above the mantel piece in their living room”.
