Birth flowers series

You have likely heard of birth stones associated with the month that you were born and are sure to be familiar with your star sign; however, you may not be aware that months of the year are also assigned birth flowers to represent the gorgeous seasonal changes and characteristics of each month, and it is these birth flowers that are the stars of a new series of drawings.

At the time of writing, I have completed three birth flower months: June, July and August; let’s find out more about them:

June’s birth flowers are the dreamy rose and honeysuckle – two beautiful blooms that fill early summer days with a heady fragrance.

These flowers also have significant symbolism too: for the rose, the meaning is dependent on the colour, for example pink is synonymous with gratitude and joy, and honeysuckle is thought to represent happiness, everlasting love and affection.

The birth flowers for July are graceful larkspur and water lily.

Larkspur symbolises joy and love, and the capacity for compassion and empathy, whilst water lily represents peace, unity, beauty and rebirth.

Probably one of our most recognisable flowers is the ethereal poppy, which is one of the birth flowers for August. The poppy is joined by gladiolus, a delicate flower with an upright stem.

As with the rose, the symbolism of the poppy flower is dependent on the colour, for example red is synonymous with pleasure and remembrance and yellow with wealth and success, whilst gladiolus is thought to represent strength and integrity.

I’m really enjoying getting to know these flowers better as I work through the months and look forward to adding the remaining birth flowers to the collection.

Along with the original drawings, prints are also available, which are great for gifting.
